AG: officer-involved shooting at liquor store legally justified


SAY BERRY JONES WAS HEADING TO LAWRENCE FOR DRUGS. TROOPERS WERE TOLD HE WAS ARMED AND INTOXICATED. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SHOWS THE MOMENT BEFORE HE WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY POLICE. HE TAKES OUT WHAT APPEARS TO BE A GUN AND TWO TROOPERS SHOT FIVE TIMES HITTING HIM TWICE.>>HAVE THEM STAGE AT THE BRIDGE.>>THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE WAS LEGALLY JUSTIFIED. MIKE: THE DAY STARTED IN PORTSMOUTH WHE JONES TOOK THE TRUCK OF HIS NEIGHBOR AND TOOK OFF. A 911 CALL IT DESCRIBES JONES SPEEDING ON I-95.>>HIS TIRES WERE DISINTEGRATING. MIKE OUTSIDE THE STATE LIQUOR STORE IN HAMPTON, JONES GOES BEHIND THE PILLAR. THE SUSPECT IS BELIEVED TO BE ARMED WITH A HANDGUN. MIKE: JONES WATCHES AS A TROOPER ARRIVES. WE SEE HIM ON HIS PHONE SENDING A MESSAGE TO HIS EX-WIFE SAYING — I AM SORRY. TROOPERS TRIED TO GET HIS ATTENTION, ORDERING CUSTOMERS TO TAKE COVER INSIDE. AFTER THE SHOOTING, POLICE SAY JONES WAS ALIVE BUT CONTINUED TO REFUSE ORDERS. JONES WAS ARMED WITH A B GUN BUT THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE SAYS TROOPERS HAD A REASONABLE BELIEF IT WAS A REAL GUN. JUNE 13, THE OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING WAS TRAGIC. MIKE JONES LATER DIED AT THE HOSPITAL.
